Dip-and-wipe Method

The dip-and-wipe method is a simple surface-treatment technique in which a material is immersed in a liquid formulation and then wiped to remove excess, enabling controlled deposition. Its operation depends on contact between the substrate and solution, followed by wiping that regulates the retained film before drying or curing. In bioengineering, this approach can support the preparation of coated biomaterials, laboratory devices, and interfaces for subsequent biological testing. Because it requires relatively simple equipment and can be adapted to different substrates and formulations, the method offers a practical way to modify surface properties while maintaining straightforward process control and reproducibility.

Optimized sampling protocols and the development of new wipe materials can be facilitated by standardized measurements of collection efficiency from wipe-sampling. Our approach for sampling trace explosives uses an automated device to control speed, force, and distance during wipe-sampling followed by extraction of collected explosives.

A protocol to expose bare fibers on the composite surface by eliminating resin rich area is presented. The fibers are exposed during fabrication of the composites, not by the post surface treatment. The exposed carbon composites exhibit high electrical conductivity in the through-thickness direction and high mechanical property.

Here we present a method to measure organismal fat levels in the third instar (L3) larval stage of Drosophila melanogaster. This method exploits the comparatively low density of fat tissue to differentiate between larvae with altered fat stores. Buoyancy-based analysis is a valuable tool for rapid, reproducible, and economical screening.
