Mass Flow Controller

A mass flow controller is an instrument that measures and regulates the flow rate of a gas or liquid, helping maintain precise process conditions in bioengineering systems. For gases, it typically uses a thermal sensor to detect heat transfer across a flow channel and adjusts a control valve through feedback to match a programmed set point. Mass flow controllers support controlled gas delivery in bioreactors, cell culture systems, tissue-engineering platforms, and analytical instruments, where oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or other gases influence pH, metabolism, pressure, and cell growth. Accurate flow regulation improves reproducibility, process stability, and experimental control.

Mass Conservation and Flow Rate Measurements

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...

There are several methods to control power flow in power systems: Prime mover and excitation control of generators Switching of shunt capacitor banks, shunt reactors, and static var systems Control of tap-changing and regulating transformers A simple generator in the system is represented by its Thevenin equivalent circuit, which represents its model operating under balanced steady-state conditions. The key parameters include the generator terminal voltage Vt, the excitation voltage Eg,...

Conservation of Mass in Fixed, Nondeforming Control Volume

The principle of conservation of mass is fundamental in fluid dynamics and is crucial for analyzing flow within fixed control volumes, such as pipes or ducts. This principle states that the total mass within a control volume remains constant unless altered by the inflow or outflow of mass through the control surfaces. This results in a vital relationship for steady, incompressible flow where the mass entering a system equals the mass leaving it. In the case of a sewer pipe, which can be modeled...

Conservation of Mass in Moving, Nondeforming Control Volume

Stormwater detention basins are essential in managing runoff during heavy rainfall, particularly in urban areas where impervious surfaces increase the risk of flooding. Understanding the conservation of mass in these systems allows engineers to optimize basin performance, balancing inflow, outflow, and water storage. In the context of a detention basin, the conservation of mass states that the total mass of water entering the basin must equal the mass leaving the basin plus any accumulation of...
