Portable Plate Reader

Portable plate readers are compact instruments that measure optical signals from multiple wells of a microplate, enabling laboratory assays outside conventional facilities. They illuminate samples and detect absorbance, fluorescence, or luminescence produced by reactions, cells, or labeled biomolecules, then convert those signals into quantitative measurements; miniaturized optics, electronics, and battery-powered operation support field or point-of-use testing. In bioengineering, these readers can monitor enzyme activity, microbial growth, nucleic-acid assays, and colorimetric diagnostic reactions while reducing equipment and workflow demands. Their portability supports decentralized research, rapid screening, and resource-limited applications, although assay performance depends on calibration, sample handling, and environmental conditions.

Introduction to the Microplate Reader

2023

The microplate reader is a multimodal instrument that allows for a variety of experiments to be performed and measured simultaneously. Microplate readers can make absorbance, fluorescence and luminescence measurements. Multiwell plates are integral to the microplate reader and allow for many experiments to be performed at once. Regardless of the assay type, experiments on the plate reader utilize a standard curve to determine the experimental values. This curve uses samples of known...

2012

A reliable home-based way to assess the language comprehension of very young typically developing children, as well as those with autism, is described. The method analyzes children's eye gaze while viewing side-by-side images but hearing an audio that matches only one image. Stimuli are designed with young participants in mind.
