Synthetic Resin Mounting

Synthetic resin mounting is a histological technique that preserves stained biological specimens beneath a coverslip for durable microscopic examination. After dehydration and clearing, a tissue section is placed in a synthetic polymer medium dissolved in an organic solvent; solvent evaporation or curing hardens the resin, secures the coverslip, and provides optical clarity for transmitted light microscopy. This permanent mounting method protects delicate sections from physical damage and supports long-term storage, image comparison, and archival documentation. In biological techniques, it is commonly used to prepare tissue slides for studying cellular architecture, disease-related changes, and the distribution of histological stains.

The synthesis of asymmetric species of ferrocene is challenging using solution techniques. This report focuses on the methods carried out to produce a ferrocene-biotin bioconjugate using facile and clean reactions accomplished via solid-phase synthesis. Incorporation of a thiolate moiety is shown to impart the ability for immobilization on gold surfaces.

Source: Schaeffer, J. W., Chandler, et al. Detection of Viruses from Bioaerosols Using Anion Exchange Resin. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the detection of viruses from bioaerosols using an anion exchange resin. A liquid impinger containing the resin is used to capture viruses from the air. The resin is collected and treated with a virus lysis buffer containing carrier RNA. The lysate is transferred to a microcentrifuge tube for viral RNA isolation, followed by qRT-PCR to amplify...
