Alcohol Channel Activation

Alcohol channel activation is the modulation of membrane ion channels by alcohol molecules, a process that changes electrical signaling in cells and helps explain alcohol’s effects on nervous-system function. Depending on the channel and alcohol concentration, alcohol can interact with channel proteins or the surrounding lipid membrane, altering protein conformation and thereby increasing or decreasing ion flow across the membrane. Studying these responses connects molecular events to changes in neuronal excitability, synaptic communication, and behavior, while also informing research on intoxication, tolerance, dependence, and potential therapeutic targets for alcohol-related disorders.

Antiepileptic Drugs: Potassium Channel Activators

2024

Ezocgabine or retigabine, an antiepileptic drug of remarkable efficacy, has revolutionized the management of seizures. It is a potassium channel activator, explicitly targeting the family of Q subtype potassium channels. It enhances the transmembrane potassium currents, regulating neuronal excitability. This action stabilizes the resting membrane potential, a pivotal factor in mitigating the hyperexcitability that characterizes epilepsy. Ezogabine has gained approval as an adjunctive treatment...

Source: Lara Al Hariri and Ahmed Basabrain at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA, USA Ferric Chloride Test for PhenolsExpand In this lab, you will identify an unknown alcohol using the ferric chloride test, the Jones test, and the Lucas test. You'll test known alcohols alongside the unknown alcohol as examples of positive and negative results for each test. The four known alcohols are 1-butanol, a primary alcohol, 2-butanol, a secondary alcohol, 2-methyl-2-propanol, a tertiary...

Identifying Alcohols - Concepts

Alcohols Alcohols are organic compounds that are amongst the most recognizable and familiar, as they have wide-ranging applications and uses in everyday life. Alcohols are organic molecules containing a hydroxyl functional group connected to an alkyl or aryl group (ROH). If the hydroxyl carbon only has a single R group, it is known as primary alcohol. If it has two R groups, it is a secondary alcohol, and if it has three R groups, it is a tertiary alcohol. Like many other organic compounds,...

We use the patch-clamp technique to measure GABA-activated single-channel currents (GABAA channels, GABAA receptors) and the synaptic and tonic currents they generate in neurons. Activation of the channels decreases neuronal excitability in health and disease 1,2,3,4.

Described here is a rapid and effective procedure for functional reconstitution of purified wild-type and mutant CFTR protein that preserves activity for this chloride channel, which is defective in Cystic Fibrosis. Iodide efflux from reconstituted proteoliposomes mediated by CFTR allows studies of channel activity and the effects of small molecules.
