Experimental Rat Model

An experimental rat model is a living rat used to represent biological processes, disease states, or treatment responses under controlled laboratory conditions. Researchers establish these models through procedures such as genetic modification, surgical intervention, chemical exposure, or behavioral conditioning, then compare physiological, molecular, or behavioral outcomes with appropriate controls. Experimental rat models support studies of neuroscience, physiology, toxicology, metabolism, and pharmacology by linking cellular mechanisms to whole-organism responses. They help researchers evaluate disease progression, investigate therapeutic targets, and assess safety or efficacy before clinical research, while careful experimental design remains essential for reproducibility and responsible interpretation.

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is bleeding that occurs into the subarachnoid space when an aneurysm ruptures. While the morbidity and mortality from this event has been on a decline due to improved treatment approaches, the risk of vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage continues to be the same as it was several years ago. The importance of establishing a comprehensive and reproducible animal model to identify initiating events of cerebral vasospasm has been the focus of research...

Focal demyelination is induced in the optic nerve using lysolecithin microinjection. Visual evoked potentials are recorded via skull electrodes implanted over the visual cortex to examine the signal conduction along the visual pathway in vivo. This protocol details the surgical procedures underlying electrode implantation and optic nerve microinjection.
