Liver Inflammation

Liver inflammation is an immune response in hepatic tissue that helps address injury, infection, toxins, or metabolic stress but can impair liver function when persistent. Damaged hepatocytes and resident immune cells release signaling molecules that recruit additional immune cells, alter blood flow, and initiate tissue repair; unresolved inflammation can promote fibrosis through excess deposition of extracellular matrix. In biology and medicine, studying liver inflammation clarifies how conditions such as viral hepatitis, alcohol-related injury, and fatty liver disease progress. Research on its cellular mechanisms supports biomarker development, disease classification, and therapies designed to limit tissue damage while preserving regeneration.

Overview In response to tissue injury and infection, mast cells initiate inflammation. Mast cells release chemicals that increase the permeability of adjacent blood capillaries and attract additional immune cells to the wound or site of infection. Neutrophils are phagocytic leukocytes that exit the bloodstream and engulf invading microbes. Blood clotting platelets seal the wound and fibers create a scaffold for wound healing. Macrophages engulf aging neutrophils to end the acute inflammatory...

Schistosoma mansoni eggs are potent stimulators of the T helper type 2 (Th2) immune response, characteristic of parasite infection, asthma and allergic inflammation. This protocol utilizes S. mansoni egg injection to generate a CD4 Th2 cytokine-induced inflammatory response in the lung, characterized by lung granuloma formation around the egg, eosinophilia and macrophage alternative activation.

Experimental models of inflammatory bowel disease have allowed us to examine the complex innate and adaptive immune responses associated with pathogenesis. Using histological scoring, quantification of pro-inflammatory cytokines and myeloperoxidase activity, one can begin to assess these responses seen in inflammatory bowel disease.
