Mitochondrial Turnover

Mitochondrial turnover is the coordinated process by which cells remove, recycle, and replace mitochondria, maintaining organelle quality and energy production. It involves mitochondrial biogenesis, which generates new mitochondrial components, and selective degradation of damaged mitochondria through mitophagy, a form of autophagy that delivers targeted organelles to lysosomes for breakdown. This dynamic balance helps cells adapt to changing energy demands and limit the accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria. Studying mitochondrial turnover supports research in metabolism, aging, neurobiology, and disease, where disrupted mitochondrial quality control can affect cellular function and contribute to pathology.

Animal Mitochondrial Genetics

2020

Among all the organelles in an animal cell, only mitochondria have their own independent genomes. Animal mitochondrial DNA is a double-stranded, closed-circular molecule with around 20,000 base pairs. Mitochondrial DNA is unique in that one of its two strands, the heavy, or H, -strand is guanine rich, whereas the complementary strand is cytosine rich and called the light, or L, -strand. Compared to nuclear DNA, mitochondrial DNA has a very low percentage of non-coding regions and is marked by...

This protocol describes a procedure to study the respiration of mitochondria isolated from skeletal muscles. This method was adapted from Scorrano et al. (2007). The mitochondrial isolation procedure requires about 2 hours. The mitochondrial respiration can be completed in about 1 hour.

Analysis of Accounts Receivable Turnover

2025

Accounts receivable turnover is critical for evaluating how effectively a company manages its credit sales and collections. High turnover typically signals that a company collects outstanding debts promptly. In contrast, a low turnover may point to issues in credit policy or customer payment behavior that can strain cash flow and working capital.Calculating the Turnover RatioThe accounts receivable turnover ratio is calculated as:Accounts Receivable Turnover = Net Credit Sales ÷ Average...
