Pig Blood Collection

Pig blood collection is the controlled acquisition of blood from swine for laboratory analysis, clinical assessment, or research, making it an important method in veterinary and biomedical biology. The procedure typically uses venipuncture or another approved sampling route, with careful restraint, sterile equipment, and appropriate anticoagulants when plasma or whole blood is required; clotting allows serum preparation. Proper sample identification, handling, and storage help preserve cellular and biochemical measurements. Collected blood supports studies of physiology, immunity, disease, nutrition, pharmacology, and comparative medicine, while standardized techniques improve animal welfare, reproducibility, and the reliability of downstream assays.

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Blood collection is a common procedure in swine research and clinical studies. The choice of sampling site depends on the animal's age, body size, the volume of blood required, the study objectives and approved IACUC...

Though a known model, the guinea pig currently represents a niche in experimental animal sciences and limited data is available on the execution of most procedures. Here we present four different approaches to non-terminal in vivo blood sampling techniques in either conscious or anaesthetized guinea pigs.

In this protocol, porcine specific primers were designed, plasmids-containing porcine specific DNA fragments were constructed, and standard curves for quantitation were established. Using species-specific primers, cpsDNA was quantified by qPCR in pig-to-mouse cell transplantation models and pig-to-monkey artery patch transplantation models.
