Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is energy obtained from naturally replenished sources, including sunlight, wind, moving water, geothermal heat, and biomass. It matters because it can supply electricity, heat, and fuels while reducing dependence on finite fossil resources. In biological systems, photosynthesis stores solar energy in organic matter, and microorganisms can convert that biomass into biogas through anaerobic digestion; other technologies use solar cells or turbines to convert light or motion into electricity. These processes support applications in bioenergy, wastewater treatment, agriculture, and sustainable biomanufacturing, while requiring assessment of land use, resource availability, and ecological effects.

2013

Surface renewal is a micrometeorological method that is being used increasingly to determine energy fluxes, but its technical complexity makes it inaccessible to a broad audience. We describe the steps needed to set up and calibrate a surface renewal field station, to acquire and process data, and to correctly interpret results.

2016

In this study, a protocol was developed to produce good quality pellets using a flat die pellet mill at reduced specific energy consumption testing high-moisture corn stover and a starch based binder. The results indicated that adding a corn starch binder improved the pellet durability, reduced percent fines and decreased specific energy consumption.

What is Energy?

2020

The universe is composed of matter in different forms, and all forms of matter contain energy. The different forms of energy on Earth originate from the Sun — the ultimate energy source. Plants capture light energy from the Sun, and, via the process of photosynthesis, convert it into chemical energy. This stored energy from plants can be harnessed in many ways. For example, eating plant products as food provides energy for our body to function, and burning wood or coal (fossilized plants)...

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates the work-energy principle. Energy is one of the most important concepts in science and is not simple to define. This experiment will deal with two different kinds of energy: gravitational potential energy and translational kinetic energy. Gravitational potential energy is defined as the energy an object...
