Supernatant Pellet Separation

Supernatant-pellet separation is a laboratory technique that divides a liquid sample into a clarified supernatant and a concentrated pellet, allowing researchers to isolate and analyze different cellular or molecular components. The process typically uses centrifugation, in which centrifugal force drives denser particles, such as cells, organelles, protein aggregates, or precipitated nucleic acids, to the bottom of a tube while less-dense material remains suspended in the liquid above. Careful removal of the supernatant and resuspension of the pellet support downstream assays, purification steps, microscopy, and biochemical analysis. In biology, this method helps characterize sample composition and separate cellular fractions efficiently.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Ana J. García-Sáez — University of Tübingen Most samples of interest are mixtures of many different components. Sample preparation, a key step in the analytical process, removes interferences that may affect the analysis. As such, developing separation techniques is an important endeavor not just in academia, but also in industry. One way to separate mixtures is to use their solubility properties. In this short paper, we will deal with aqueous solutions. The...

2016

In this study, a protocol was developed to produce good quality pellets using a flat die pellet mill at reduced specific energy consumption testing high-moisture corn stover and a starch based binder. The results indicated that adding a corn starch binder improved the pellet durability, reduced percent fines and decreased specific energy consumption.

An Assay To Evaluate the Anticancer Effects of Lactobacillus Cell-Free Supernatant

This video demonstrates an in vitro assay to study the anticancer effects of Lactobacillus cell-free supernatant (LCFS). Upon exposing colorectal cancer spheroids to varying doses of LCFS, the interaction with the bacterial metabolites in LCFS induces apoptosis in the cancer cells, disrupting the spheroid structure and leading to cell death in a dose-dependent manner.
