Thermoplastic Materials

Thermoplastic materials are polymers that soften when heated and harden when cooled, allowing them to be repeatedly shaped without fundamentally changing their chemical structure. Their behavior arises from reversible changes in molecular mobility: heat weakens intermolecular interactions and permits flow, while cooling restores rigidity; unlike thermosetting plastics, they can often be remelted and reprocessed. In biology, thermoplastics such as polystyrene, polycarbonate, polypropylene, and thermoplastic elastomers support laboratory consumables, microfluidic devices, diagnostic platforms, and tissue-engineering scaffolds. Their tunable stiffness, transparency, chemical resistance, and manufacturability influence cell culture, sample handling, and the design of biomedical research tools.

Here we present a protocol to construct a pressure-controlled syringe pump to be used in microfluidic applications. This syringe pump is made from an additively manufactured body, off-the-shelf hardware, and open-source electronics. The resulting system is low-cost, straightforward to build, and delivers well-regulated fluid flow to enable rapid microfluidic research.
