Proliferation Rate Measurement

Proliferation rate measurement is the quantitative assessment of how quickly a cell population increases over time, providing a key indicator of growth and disease behavior. In cancer research, investigators estimate proliferation by tracking cell number or DNA synthesis, measuring metabolic activity, or detecting proliferation-associated markers such as Ki-67 under defined culture conditions. These approaches can reveal differences between normal and malignant cells, characterize tumor growth, and assess how genetic changes or microenvironmental conditions influence cell-cycle progression. Proliferation measurements also help evaluate anticancer treatments by showing whether a drug slows population expansion, induces cell-cycle arrest, or reduces viable cancer cell numbers.

Measuring Reaction Rates

Polarimetry finds application in chemical kinetics to measure the concentration and reaction kinetics of optically active substances during a chemical reaction. Optically active substances have the capability of rotating the plane of polarization of linearly polarized light passing through them—a feature called optical rotation. Optical activity is attributed to the molecular structure of substances. Normal monochromatic light is unpolarized and possesses oscillations of the electrical field in...

A protocol for the measurement of outgassing rates of hydrogen from ordinary steel vacuum chambers using the rate-of-pressure rise method is presented.

Bromodeoxyuridine Pulse Labelling Assay: A Technique to Measure Cell Proliferation

2023

The video describes the stepwise pulse labeling assay of mammalian cells with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) for measuring cell proliferation. The BrdU uptake permits the temporal tracking of cells that were in the synthesis phase at a specific point in time, without requiring the cells to be synchronized.

Metabolic disorders are among one of the most common diseases in humans. The genetically tractable model organism D. melanogaster can be used to identify novel genes that regulate metabolism. This paper describes a relatively simple method which allows studying the metabolic rate in flies by measuring their CO2 production.

Mass Conservation and Flow Rate Measurements

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...
