Electrochemical Detector

An electrochemical detector is an analytical device that identifies or measures chemical species by converting an electrochemical reaction into an electrical signal, making it valuable for sensitive chemical analysis. In a typical system, an analyte reaches an electrode and undergoes oxidation or reduction; the resulting current, potential, or change in conductivity depends on its concentration and the applied measurement conditions. Detectors may be integrated with techniques such as liquid chromatography, where they provide selective detection of electroactive compounds. They support quantitative analysis in environmental monitoring, pharmaceutical testing, clinical chemistry, and industrial process control, while advances in electrode materials and miniaturized sensors continue to improve selectivity, portability, and detection limits.

Electrochemical biosensors detect the binding of a target molecule by sensing an oxidation-reduction event. These sensors paved the way for modern biosensing after the invention of the glucose biosensor. This video will introduce electrochemical biosensing, show the workings of the glucose biosensor, and discuss how electrochemical biosensors are used in cancer detection.

We describe an electrochemical sensor assay method for rapid bacterial detection and identification. The assay involves a sensor array functionalized with DNA oligonucleotide capture probes for ribosomal RNA (rRNA) species-specific sequences. Sandwich hybridization of target rRNA with the capture probe and a horseradish peroxidase-linked DNA oligonucleotide detector probe produces a measurable amperometric current.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electrical resistance is the ability of an electrical circuit element to resist the flow of electricity. Resistance is defined by Ohm's Law: (Equation 1) Where is the voltage and is the current. Ohm's law is useful for determining the resistance of ideal resistors. However, many circuit elements are more complex and can't be described by...
