Experimental Determination

Experimental determination is the use of controlled measurements and observations to establish the identity, composition, structure, or properties of a substance. In chemistry, researchers formulate a testable question, control relevant conditions, collect quantitative data, and interpret results against standards, theoretical predictions, or reference values; methods such as titration, spectroscopy, gravimetric analysis, and calorimetry provide distinct forms of evidence. This approach supports compound identification, concentration measurement, reaction analysis, and evaluation of physical and chemical properties. Careful calibration, replication, uncertainty analysis, and comparison with expected results help distinguish reliable findings from experimental error and strengthen conclusions across chemical research.

Experimental Determination of Chemical Formula

2020

The elemental makeup of a compound defines its chemical identity, and chemical formulas are the most concise way of representing this elemental makeup. When a compound’s formula is unknown, measuring the mass of its constituent elements is often the first step in determining the formula experimentally. Determination of Empirical Formulas The most common approach to determining a compound’s chemical formula is first to measure the masses of its constituent elements. However, chemical formulas...

2018

Here we describe a protocol to determine pulmonary fungal burden in mice with invasive aspergillosis by quantification of Gomori's modified methanamine silver staining in histological sections. Use of this method resulted in comparable results with less animals compared to assessment of fungal burden by quantitative PCR of lung fungal DNA.

2017

We propose a method to measure a parameter that is highly relevant for corrosion assessments or predictions of reinforced concrete structures, with the main advantage of permitting testing of samples from engineering structures. This ensures real conditions at the steel-concrete interface, which are crucial to avoid artifacts of laboratory-made samples.

Determining Order of Reaction

2020

Rate laws describe the relationship between the rate of a chemical reaction and the concentration of its reactants. In a rate law, the rate constant k and the reaction orders are determined experimentally by observing how the rate of reaction changes as the concentrations of the reactants are changed. A common experimental approach to the determination of rate laws is the method of initial rates. This method involves measuring reaction rates for multiple experimental trials carried out using...
