Mil-96 Synthesis

MIL-96 synthesis is the chemical preparation of a crystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) built from metal centers and carboxylate-based organic linkers, commonly producing aluminum trimesate materials with permanent porosity. Typically, metal salts and trimesic acid are combined in a solvent under hydrothermal or solvothermal conditions, where coordination-bond formation, nucleation, and crystal growth generate the framework; pH, temperature, reaction time, and composition influence phase purity and particle morphology. The resulting porous solid can provide high surface area and chemically accessible sites for adsorption, separation, and heterogeneous catalysis. Studying its synthesis helps researchers control structure and performance for environmental, energy, and chemical-processing applications.

Source: Amber N. Barron, Ashlea Patterson, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Hydrogels are a versatile class of cross-linked polymers produced through relatively simple procedures and with generally inexpensive materials. They can be formed from solution and involve a polymer backbone formed from monomer reagents, an initiator which makes the polymer reactive and a crosslinking species which binds the polymer chains...

Source: Vy M. Dong and Diane Le, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Merrifield's solid-phase synthesis is a Nobel Prize winning invention where a reactant molecule is bound on a solid support and undergoes successive chemical reactions to form a desired compound. When the molecules are bound to a solid support, excess reagents and byproducts can be removed by washing away the impurities, while the target compound remains bound to the resin. Specifically, we will...

Metal-organic frameworks are effective in gas storage and heterogeneous catalysis, but typical synthesis methods result in loose powders that are difficult to incorporate into smart materials. We demonstrate a method of first coating fabrics with ALD metal oxides, resulting in conformal films of MOF on the fabrics during solvothermal synthesis.
