Serum Metabolomics

Serum metabolomics is the comprehensive study of small molecules in blood serum, providing a chemical snapshot of physiological state, disease, and response to treatment. It typically involves separating serum metabolites, detecting them with analytical platforms such as mass spectrometry or nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and using data analysis to identify and quantify metabolic changes. In chemistry and biomedical research, serum metabolomics supports biomarker discovery, pathway analysis, pharmacological studies, and evaluation of environmental or nutritional effects. Because serum reflects contributions from multiple tissues and processes, the approach can reveal system-wide biochemical patterns that complement targeted molecular assays.
