Advocacy

Advocacy is the process of promoting, protecting, or representing the needs, rights, and interests of individuals or groups, especially when they face barriers to informed participation or equitable care. In clinical settings, advocacy involves listening to patients, communicating their preferences and concerns, supporting informed decision-making, and addressing ethical, cultural, or systemic obstacles through collaboration with healthcare teams and institutions. Patient and professional advocacy can strengthen trust, improve communication, promote respect for autonomy, and help identify gaps in care. It also informs policy, education, and quality-improvement efforts aimed at making clinical practice more responsive, safe, and equitable.
