Heart Pacemaker Function

Heart pacemaker function is the generation and coordination of electrical impulses that set the heart’s rhythm and trigger organized contraction. In a healthy heart, the sinoatrial (SA) node spontaneously depolarizes, sending signals through the atria to the atrioventricular (AV) node and conduction system; when intrinsic pacing fails, an implanted pacemaker senses cardiac activity and delivers timed electrical stimuli through leads to maintain an appropriate rate. Clinically, understanding this function supports diagnosis and treatment of bradyarrhythmias, heart block, and related conduction disorders. Pacemaker therapy can restore ventricular timing, improve circulation, and reduce symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and syncope.

Here, the experimental protocols are described for preparing Drosophila at different developmental stages and performing longitudinal optical imaging of Drosophila heartbeats using a custom optical coherence microscopy (OCM) system. The cardiac morphological and dynamical changes can be quantitatively characterized by analyzing the heart structural and functional parameters from OCM images.
