Spare Tube Availability

Spare tube availability is the practice of collecting and retaining an additional appropriately labeled specimen tube for potential clinical testing beyond the initial laboratory order. The spare tube must contain a suitable specimen, use the correct additive when required, and remain within validated conditions for handling, storage, volume, and stability. In clinical workflows, this resource can support add-on analyses, result verification, or repeat testing without requiring another patient draw. Clear policies for collection, identification, storage duration, and release help prevent preanalytical errors while improving turnaround time, conserving patient samples, and reducing the inconvenience and risks associated with recollection.

The Availability Heuristic

2020

A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989): When one is faced with too much information When the time to make a decision is limited When the decision to be made is unimportant When there is access to very...

Availability Heuristic

2025

Every day, people make countless decisions, from choosing a meal to approaching a work problem. Individuals are unable to make perfect decisions due to limitations such as incomplete information, finite cognitive resources, and time constraints. Individuals frequently depend on heuristics to manage these limitations. The availability heuristic is a mental shortcut people use to simplify decision-making by relying on information that is easy to recall. While this can be helpful for quick...

Spare Receptors

2023

Some receptors remain unoccupied even when an agonist produces a maximal response. Such empty ones are called spare receptors. In presence of spare receptors the maximum effect of an agonist drug is achieved with fewer than 100% of the receptors being occupied. To determine the presence of spare receptors, scientists often compare the concentration of the drug needed to produce 50% of the maximum effect (EC50) with the concentration of the drug needed to occupy 50% of the receptors (Kd). If the...

Source: Rachel Liu, BAO, MBBCh, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Tube thoracostomy (chest tube placement) is a procedure during which a hollow tube is inserted into the thoracic cavity for drainage of fluid or air. Emergency chest tube insertion is performed for definitive treatment of tension pneumothorax, traumatic hemothorax, large-volume pleural effusions, and empyemas. Irrespective of the cause of air and fluid accumulation in the pleural space, the...

Nerve-sparing Mid-urethral Obstruction (NeMO) in Female Small Rodents

Traditional modeling of partial bladder outlet obstruction in rodents is fraught with animal mortality. A denervation injury from dissection around the proximal urethra and bladder neck is also of major concern. We developed and evaluated a safe and reliable mid-urethral obstruction model, avoiding the shortcomings of the traditional model.
