Cardiac Morphogenesis

Cardiac morphogenesis is the developmental process through which the embryonic heart forms, bends, partitions, and matures into a functional organ. It begins with the specification and migration of cardiac progenitor cells, followed by heart tube formation, looping, chamber development, and septation, while coordinated gene signaling and mechanical forces guide tissue growth and remodeling. In developmental biology, studying these events clarifies how cardiac structure and function arise and how congenital heart defects develop. Experimental models of cardiac morphogenesis also support research on tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and therapies that address abnormal heart development.

Plant morphogenesis—the development of a plant’s form and structure—involves several overlapping developmental processes, including growth and cell differentiation. Precursor cells differentiate into specific cell types, which are organized into the tissues and organ systems that make up the functional plant. Plant growth and cell differentiation are under complex hormonal control. Plant hormones regulate gene expression, often in response to environmental stimuli. For example, many plants...

Streptococcus pneumoniae forms discrete non-purulent microscopic lesions in the heart. Outlined is the protocol for a murine model of cardiac microlesion formation. Instruction is provided on microlesion visualization using microscopy, discrimination between early and late microlesions, and methods to detect cardiac remodeling in hearts of convalescent animals.
