Abstractive Summarization

Abstractive summarization is a natural language processing task that produces a concise representation of a document by generating new wording rather than selecting and copying sentences, making complex information easier to interpret. Typically, an encoder analyzes the source text to represent its meaning, while a decoder, often based on a Transformer with self-attention and cross-attention, predicts a coherent summary token by token; training commonly uses paired documents and human-written summaries. In engineering, the method can condense technical reports, design specifications, maintenance records, and research literature, helping teams identify requirements, risks, and findings while reducing information overload.

Effects of Thinking Abstractly or Concretely on Self-control

2023

Source: Diego Reinero & Jay Van Bavel—New York University Whether it's refraining from having a second serving of ice cream, studying instead of attending a fun party, or deciding to put money away in a savings account, sacrificing short-term outcomes in favor of long-term outcomes (i.e., delaying gratification) is a central tenant of self-control. When people apply self control, they engage numerous psychological processes to help them achieve their goal. These self-regulatory processes...

Radical Formation: Abstraction

2023

The electron of an atom can be abstracted from a compound by a relatively unstable radical to generate a new radical of relatively greater stability. For example, an initiator which forms radicals by homolysis can abstract a suitable species like a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom from a compound to generate a new radical. This ability of radicals to propagate by abstraction is a crucial feature of radical chain reactions. Even though homolysis produces radicals, it is different from radical...

Task Interruption and Resumption Paradigm for Testing the Activation and Pursuit of an Abstract Thinking Goal

2017

This protocol was designed to test the activation and pursuit of cognitive goals (e.g., an abstract thinking goal) using the task interruption and resumption paradigm. The protocol is suitable for cognitive goals that are automatically pursued once activated, as the distraction procedure prevents goal pursuit during the interruption period.

Techniques of Therapeutic Communication II: Focusing, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing

2023

Focusing involves centering a conversation on a message's critical elements or concepts. Focusing is valuable if the talk is vague or patients begin to repeat themselves. Sometimes, when patients are asked about their symptoms, they may go off-topic and try to tell their entire life story. Respectfully, the nurse should bring the conversation back into focus. This therapeutic technique can also be used when a patient brings up pertinent information during a health-related conversation. The...

Reading Research Papers

2026

Research articles are structured documents designed to communicate scientific findings efficiently and transparently. Rather than reading them sequentially like a narrative, readers can approach them strategically by understanding their standardized organization. Evaluating the title, authors, and institutional affiliations provides an initial indication of relevance, expertise, and credibility. The Abstract offers a concise summary of the study’s objective, methodology, and main findings,...
