Sharpening Kernels

Sharpening kernels are convolution matrices used in image processing to enhance fine detail, edges, and local contrast, making them important tools in engineering and computer vision. During convolution, the kernel moves across an image and calculates weighted sums of neighboring pixels; positive center weights and negative surrounding weights emphasize high-frequency changes while reducing slowly varying regions. Common designs include Laplacian and unsharp-masking kernels, which can clarify boundaries and reveal structural features. Engineers apply sharpening kernels in machine vision, medical imaging, remote sensing, and digital photography, although excessive sharpening can amplify noise and create halos.

The devastation of cereal crops by seed-infecting fungi has prompted numerous research efforts to better understand plant-pathogen interactions. To study seed-fungal interactions in a laboratory setting, we developed a robust method for the quantification of fungal reproduction, biomass, and mycotoxin contamination using kernel bioassays.

Reaction Yield

2020

The theoretical yield of a reaction is the amount of product estimated to form based on the stoichiometry of the balanced chemical equation. The theoretical yield assumes the complete conversion of the limiting reactant into the desired product. The amount of product that is obtained by performing the reaction is called the actual yield, and it may be less than or (very rarely) equal to the theoretical yield. Percent Yield In the case of chemical reactions, the actual yield of the product is...

Extracellular Wire Tetrode Recording in Brain of Freely Walking Insects

We previously developed a technique for implanting tetrode wires into the central complex of cockroach brains that allows us to monitor activity in individual units of tethered cockroaches. Here we present a modified version of that technique that allows us to also record brain activity in freely moving insects.
