Capillary Depression

Capillary depression is the lowering of a liquid surface in a narrow tube or porous passage relative to the surrounding liquid, a phenomenon important in fluid mechanics and engineering design. It occurs when adhesive forces between the liquid and solid are weaker than cohesive forces within the liquid, producing a contact angle greater than 90°; surface tension then curves the meniscus downward and creates a pressure difference that draws the liquid level lower. Engineers use capillary depression to interpret fluid behavior in small channels, porous materials, soil, and measurement devices, where wetting, surface properties, and tube dimensions influence liquid transport and system performance.

Capillary Electrophoresis (CE)

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a separation technique that separates molecules in an electric field according to size and charge. CE is performed in a small glass tube called a capillary that is filled with an electrolyte solution. Analytes are separated due to differences in electrophoretic mobility, which varies with charge, solvent viscosity, and size. Traditional electrophoresis in gels is limited in the amount of voltage...

Long-term Depression

Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory. Calcium Ion Concentration Mechanism If over time, all...

Freezing Point Depression and Boiling Point Elevation

Boiling Point Elevation The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which its vapor pressure is equal to ambient atmospheric pressure. Since the vapor pressure of a solution is lowered due to the presence of nonvolatile solutes, it stands to reason that the solution’s boiling point will subsequently be increased. Vapor pressure increases with temperature, and so a solution will require a higher temperature than will pure solvent to achieve any given vapor pressure, including one...

Purifying Capillaries From a Porcine Brain

This video demonstrates the isolation of capillaries from fresh porcine brains. The process involves removing the meninges, isolating the grey matter from the brain tissue, homogenizing and filtering the grey matter to isolate the capillaries, and finally using enzymatic digestion to purify the capillaries further.
