Electron Occupation

Electron occupation describes how electrons populate available energy levels, orbitals, or electronic states within atoms, molecules, and solid materials. It matters because this distribution determines charge, electronic structure, conductivity, and many material properties relevant to engineering. Electrons occupy lower-energy states first, while the Pauli exclusion principle limits each orbital to two electrons with opposite spins; in solids, thermal energy and the Fermi-Dirac distribution govern occupancy near the Fermi level. Understanding electron occupation supports semiconductor design, band-structure analysis, device modeling, and material selection for electronic and energy applications.

Measuring Cerebral Blood Volume in the Auditory Cortex Using Vascular Space Occupancy

2025

Position a human participant’s head within the head coil of a functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, system.Employ vascular space occupancy or VASO, a technique to measure changes in cerebral blood volume, or CBV, the blood volume within the brain.Begin by applying an inversion recovery pulse to suppress signals from blood, allowing only signals from the surrounding tissue within the region to be detected.Next, use MRI-compatible earbuds to deliver auditory stimuli. The stimuli reach...

Collection and Extraction of Occupational Air Samples for Analysis of Fungal DNA

2018

Determining the fungal diversity within an environment is a method utilized in occupational health studies to identify health hazards. This protocol describes DNA extraction from occupational air samples for amplification and sequencing of fungal ITS regions. This approach detects many fungal species that can be overlooked by traditional assessment methods.

Methods to Investigate the Regulatory Role of Small RNAs and Ribosomal Occupancy of Plasmodium falciparum

2015

Human microRNAs translocate from host erythrocytes to Plasmodium falciparum parasites. Here, the techniques used to transfect synthetic microRNAs into host erythrocytes and isolate all RNAs from P. falciparum are described. In addition, this paper will detail a method of polysome isolation in P. falciparum to determine the ribosomal occupancy and translational potential of parasite transcripts.

Electron Carriers

2019

Electron carriers can be thought of as electron shuttles. These compounds can easily accept electrons (i.e., be reduced) or lose them (i.e., be oxidized). They play an essential role in energy production because cellular respiration is contingent on the flow of electrons. Over the many stages of cellular respiration, glucose breaks down into carbon dioxide and water. Electron carriers pick up electrons lost by glucose in these reactions, temporarily storing and releasing them into the electron...
