Optical Frequency Comb

An optical frequency comb is a light source whose spectrum consists of many precisely spaced, mutually coherent frequency lines, creating a ruler for measuring optical frequencies. It is commonly generated by a mode-locked laser, in which ultrashort pulses circulate at a stable repetition rate, or by Kerr nonlinear four-wave mixing in a microresonator. The spacing and offset of the comb can be stabilized against an accurate reference, linking optical and microwave frequencies with exceptional precision. In engineering, optical frequency combs support frequency metrology, high-resolution spectroscopy, precision timing, telecommunications, optical coherence tomography, and distance measurement, enabling advances in sensing, navigation, and photonic systems.

2013

A method to image ex vivo pulmonary resection specimens with optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI) and obtain precise correlation to histology is described, which is essential to developing specific OFDI interpretation criteria for pulmonary pathology. This method is applicable to other tissue types and imaging techniques to obtain precise imaging to histology correlation for accurate image interpretation and assessment. Imaging criteria established with this technique would then be...

Optical Biosensing

2023

Optical biosensors utilize light to detect the binding of a target molecule. These sensors can utilize a label molecule, which produces a measurable signal such as fluorescence, or these sensors can be label-free and use the changes in optical properties, such as refractive index, to sense for the binding of the target molecule. This video introduces both label and label-free optical biosensors, demonstrates their use in the laboratory, and shows some applications of the technology.
