Pressure-relief Diaphragm

A pressure-relief diaphragm is a flexible membrane used in engineering systems to protect vessels, pipelines, and other equipment from excessive pressure. When the pressure difference across the diaphragm exceeds its design threshold, the membrane deflects, actuates a relief mechanism, or ruptures to provide a controlled flow path and reduce internal pressure. Engineers select the diaphragm’s material, thickness, geometry, and set pressure according to operating conditions, including temperature, chemical exposure, and cyclic loading. These devices help prevent structural damage, leaks, and hazardous failures in chemical processing, energy, manufacturing, and fluid-handling systems while supporting reliable pressure control and safer equipment design.

2014

Diagnostic ultrasound imaging has proven to be effective in diagnosing various respiratory diseases in human and animal subjects. We demonstrate a comprehensive ultrasound protocol utilized by Dr. Zuo's lab to analyze diaphragm kinetics specifically in mouse models. This is also a non-invasive research technique which can provide quantitative information on mouse respiratory muscle function.

Compound muscle action potential recording quantitatively assesses functional diaphragm innervation by phrenic motor neurons. Whole-mount diaphragm immunohistochemistry assesses morphological innervation at individual neuromuscular junctions. The goal of this protocol is to demonstrate how these two powerful methodologies can be used in various rodent models of spinal cord disease.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

(2018) This video demonstrates fluorescence imaging of calcium dynamics at neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) in a transgenic mouse expressing genetically encoded calcium indicators. A NJM is identified by fluorescently tagged acetylcholine receptors in the diaphragm with the phrenic nerve. An image splitter is used to visualize multiple signals...
