Silicone Oil Coating

Silicone oil coating is a thin layer of silicone-based fluid applied to a surface to modify its wetting, friction, release, or protective properties in engineering systems. Because silicone oils have low surface energy and remain chemically stable across a broad temperature range, the coating forms a water-repellent, lubricating film that limits direct contact between the surface and liquids, particles, or adjacent components. Engineers use these coatings to reduce sticking and friction, protect materials from moisture and contamination, and improve the handling of polymers, metals, glass, and elastomers. Performance depends on film thickness, surface preparation, oil viscosity, and operating conditions, making controlled application important for durable results.

Improved Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Double Casting via Silicone Oil Treatment for Densely Packed Microstructure Replication

2025

This protocol presents an improved demolding procedure for the Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) double casting technique by introducing silicone oil as a non-adhesive barrier between PDMS layers. Unlike plasma or chemical surface modification methods, this approach requires no specialized or costly equipment, making it a more accessible and cost-effective alternative.
