Standard Hammer Impact Test

The Standard Hammer Impact Test is an engineering method for measuring a material’s ability to absorb energy during sudden loading, providing an indicator of impact toughness. In a typical pendulum test, a weighted hammer strikes a notched specimen, and the energy absorbed in fracture is calculated from the hammer’s change in height before and after impact. Test results help compare materials, assess notch sensitivity, and identify ductile-to-brittle transition behavior under controlled conditions. The method supports material selection, quality control, and failure analysis for components exposed to shocks, collisions, or rapidly applied loads.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA One of the more insidious types of failures that can occur in structures are brittle fractures, which are mostly due to either poor quality materials or poor material selection. Brittle fractures tend to occur suddenly and without much material inelasticity; think of a bone fracture, for example. These failures often occur in situations where there is little ability for the material to develop...

Optimized sampling protocols and the development of new wipe materials can be facilitated by standardized measurements of collection efficiency from wipe-sampling. Our approach for sampling trace explosives uses an automated device to control speed, force, and distance during wipe-sampling followed by extraction of collected explosives.

Impact occurs when two bodies collide, leading to the application of impulsive forces between them. Analyzing impact mechanics involves considering two colliding particles moving along a line known as the line of impact, which passes through their centers and is perpendicular to the contact plane. When particles with different initial velocities collide, they induce deformation by applying equal and opposite impulses. At the point of maximum deformation, the particles move together with...

Getting to Compliance in Forced Exercise in Rodents: A Critical Standard to Evaluate Exercise Impact in Aging-related Disorders and Disease

Exercise may alleviate behavioral impairments associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Studies of the mechanisms underlying exercise-mediated effects have increased in disease models, but the neurobiological background accompanying these diseases, specifically aging, is likely not considered. Here, we illustrate measures to increase the likelihood of a successful exercise paradigm in aged rats.
