Footprint Identification Technique

Footprint identification technique is a field and laboratory method for determining the animal source of a footprint from its shape, dimensions, and pattern. Investigators document tracks through photography, measurements, or casts, then compare features such as toe arrangement, heel or pad structure, stride, and gait with reference specimens; substrate and track condition help assess reliability. In environmental research, the technique supports wildlife surveys, species distribution studies, and monitoring of elusive or nocturnal animals without direct capture. When combined with repeated observations and habitat data, footprint evidence can reveal movement patterns and changes in ecosystem use.

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is an iconic, endangered species, but conservation efforts are challenged by habitat shrinkage and conflict with commercial farmers. The footprint identification technique, a robust, accurate and cost-effective image classification system, is a new approach to monitoring cheetahs.

Here, we present a protocol to enrich endogenous RNA binding sites or "footprints" of RNA:protein (RNP) complexes from mammalian cells. This approach involves two immunoprecipitations of RNP subunits and is therefore dubbed RNA immunoprecipitation in tandem (RIPiT).

Records range from maintaining information on cage cards to having a detailed database with all of the relevant information on each animal. The primary component of recordkeeping is the individual identification of research animals. There are a variety of methods suitable for identifying mice and rats. This...
