Light Attenuation Estimation

Light attenuation estimation is the process of determining how strongly light intensity decreases as it travels through a material or environmental medium, such as water, air, soil, or vegetation. It typically compares incident and transmitted irradiance and represents loss through absorption and scattering, often using an attenuation coefficient derived from the distance traveled and the change in intensity. In environmental research, these estimates help characterize water clarity, suspended particles, dissolved substances, atmospheric visibility, and the depth at which light remains available for photosynthesis. They support ecological monitoring, remote sensing, aquatic productivity studies, and assessment of environmental change.

Transcription Attenuation in Prokaryotes

2020

Transcriptional attenuation occurs when RNA transcription is prematurely terminated due to the formation of a terminator mRNA hairpin structure. Bacteria use these hairpins to regulate the transcription process and control the synthesis of several amino acids including histidine, lysine, threonine, and phenylalanine. Transcription attenuation takes place in the non-coding regions of mRNA. There are several different mechanisms used to attenuate transcription. In ribosome mediated...

The goal of the protocol described in this paper is to induce compulsive-like behavior in rats for the study of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This behavior is precipitated by attenuating a signal indicating that a lever-press response was effective in producing food.

What are Estimates?

It isn't easy to measure a parameter such as the mean height or the mean weight of a population. So, we draw samples from the population and calculate the mean height or mean weight of the individuals in the sample. This sample data acts as a representative measure of the population parameter. These sample statistics are known as estimates. The estimate for the mean of a sample is denoted by ͞x, whereas the mean of the population is designated as μ. Further, parameters such as the mean,...

The Precision of Visual Working Memory with Delayed Estimation

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Human memory is limited. Throughout most of its history, experimental psychology has focused on investigating the discrete, quantitative limits of memory—how many individual pieces of information a person can remember. Recently, experimental psychologists have also become interested in more qualitative limits—how precisely is information stored? The concept of memory precision can be both intuitive and elusive at once. It is...

Intradermal Immunization with Live Attenuated Sporozoites in a Mouse Model

This video demonstrates an assay for immunizing a mouse model with live attenuated sporozoites. The radiation-attenuated Plasmodium sporozoites are injected into the dorsal side of the mouse's ear. After injections at multiple locations on both ears, the mouse is allowed to recover.
