Transgenic Flies

Transgenic flies are fruit flies engineered to carry and express an introduced DNA sequence, making them a powerful model for studying gene function in genetics. Researchers typically insert a transgene into the Drosophila genome, often with regulatory elements that control when and where it is expressed; the modified sequence can then be transmitted through the germline to offspring. By linking genetic changes to observable traits, transgenic flies support analyses of development, behavior, disease mechanisms, and protein function. Their short generation time, well-characterized genome, and efficient genetic tools also enable controlled crosses, mutation studies, and high-throughput screening.

Drosophila has emerged as a significant model system for dissecting the cellular and molecular underpinnings of behavioral responses to alcohol. Here we present a protocol for the collection of alcohol sensitivity data in a circadian context that can be easily applied to other experiments and is well-suited for undergraduate research.
