Ecm Polysaccharide Binding

ECM polysaccharide binding is the molecular recognition of carbohydrate-rich components in the extracellular matrix by proteins, cells, or microorganisms, influencing tissue organization and host-pathogen interactions. Binding commonly occurs when lectin-like domains or positively charged protein regions recognize specific sugars and sulfate patterns in molecules such as hyaluronan, heparan sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate. In immunology and infection, these interactions can mediate microbial attachment, alter immune-cell trafficking, and affect pathogen access to tissues. Characterizing binding specificity and strength helps clarify infection mechanisms and supports the development of anti-adhesion strategies, biomaterials, and therapeutics that modify extracellular matrix interactions.

Biosynthesis of Polysaccharides

2025

Polysaccharides such as glycogen and starch are synthesized from nucleoside diphosphate sugars, primarily uridine diphosphate glucose (UDPG) and adenosine diphosphate glucose (ADPG). These activated glucose donors act as key intermediates in carbohydrate metabolism and biosynthesis. UDPG primarily involves glycogen synthesis in animals and many bacteria, while ADPG plays a fundamental role in starch synthesis in plants and certain bacteria.UDPG is formed when glucose-1-phosphate reacts with...

This video describes the preparation of a homogenized and digested extracellular matrix suspension from decellularized and lyophilized tissues. This technique helps in fabricating ECM-derived porous foams and microcarriers for use as substrates in advanced 3D cell culture models.

Fibronectins Connect Cells with ECM

2023

Fibronectin is an adhesive glycoprotein present in the extracellular matrix of embryogenic and adult tissue. These molecules primarily aid in regulating cell motility and attachment. A fibronectin molecule is composed of two identical polypeptide chains attached to each other by a pair of disulfide bonds at the C-terminal. Both proteoglycans and collagen are attached to fibronectin proteins, which, in turn, are attached to integrin proteins. These integrin proteins interact with transmembrane...

Cellulose and Pectic Polysaccharides

2023

Every plant cell has a cell wall that protects the cell, provides structural support, and gives the cell shape. Cellulose, the main structural component of the plant cell wall, makes up over 30% of plant matter. It is the most abundant organic compound on earth. Cellulose is an unbranched polysaccharide composed of linear chains of glucose molecules linked by β (1→4) glycosidic bonds. As a cell matures, its cell wall specializes according to its type. For example, the parenchyma cells of...
