Glucose Insulin Treatment

Glucose insulin treatment is a therapeutic approach that uses insulin, alone or with controlled glucose administration, to regulate blood glucose levels and maintain metabolic stability. Insulin binds to cell-surface insulin receptors, activating signaling pathways that increase glucose uptake by muscle and adipose cells while reducing glucose production by the liver; dosing and glucose monitoring help prevent hypo- or hyperglycemia. In immunology and infection, this treatment is relevant because infection and inflammation can disrupt glucose control, while metabolic status can influence immune responses and recovery. Studying glucose-insulin management supports safer care and research into interactions between metabolism, host defense, and infectious disease.

Glucose Homeostasis: Pancreatic Islets and Insulin Secretion

2024

The pancreatic islets comprising only 1%-2% of the volume are highly vascularized and innervated mini-organs. They contain five endocrine cell types, including β cells that secrete insulin, which is synthesized as a single polypeptide chain, preproinsulin, processed to proinsulin, and finally to insulin and C-peptide. This process is complex and regulated, involving the Golgi complex, the endoplasmic reticulum, and the secretory granules of the β cell. Insulin and C-peptide are co-secreted in...
