Robotic Automation

Robotic automation is the use of programmable machines and control software to perform laboratory or industrial tasks with limited human intervention, improving consistency, throughput, and operator safety. In immunology and infection research, robotic systems coordinate liquid handling, sample transfer, incubation, washing, and signal measurement according to defined protocols, often using sensors and software to manage timing, volumes, and plate movement. These platforms support antibody assays, pathogen detection, antimicrobial screening, and cell-based experiments while reducing repetitive manual work and variation between samples. Their integration with digital tracking and analysis also strengthens reproducibility and enables larger, more systematic studies.

Here, an automated workflow to perform modular DNA "device" assembly using a modular cloning DNA assembly method on liquid-handling robots is presented. The protocol uses an intuitive software tool for generating liquid handler picklists for combinatorial DNA device library generation, which we demonstrate using two liquid handling platforms.

High-throughput, Automated Extraction of DNA and RNA from Clinical Samples using TruTip Technology on Common Liquid Handling Robots

Peptide adsorption to plasticware during traditional tip-based serial dilutions can significantly impact potency determination and confound the understanding of structure-activity relationships used for lead identification and lead optimization phases of drug discovery. Here methods for automated acoustic non-contact serial dilution of peptide samples are described.
