Serum Bal Testing

Serum BAL testing measures the concentration of ethanol in a blood-serum sample to assess alcohol exposure and its physiological significance. In enzymatic assays, alcohol dehydrogenase converts ethanol to acetaldehyde while reducing NAD+ to NADH, and the resulting change in absorbance reflects the alcohol concentration; laboratories may also use chromatographic separation for precise quantification. The test supports clinical evaluation of suspected intoxication, helps distinguish alcohol-related impairment from other causes of altered mental status, and provides objective evidence in forensic and occupational investigations. Accurate specimen collection, handling, and interpretation are essential because timing and metabolism affect measured serum levels.

We describe a research technique for fiberoptic bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage using low pressure suction. The technique is used to harvest immune cells from the lung bronchoalveolar surfaces. Local anesthetic and mild conscious sedation (midazolam) is used. Subjects tolerate the procedure well and experience minimal side effects.

Serum Studies: Renal Function Tests

2025

Renal function tests are crucial for assessing kidney health, monitoring disease progression, and evaluating the kidneys' efficiency in waste elimination, fluid balance, and electrolyte regulation. These tests offer critical insights into kidney function, even though routine measurements may appear normal until there is a significant decline in the glomerular filtration rate or GFR. Typically, signs of kidney impairment only become evident when the GFR falls to about 50% of its normal level.

Determining the Reactivity and Titre of Serum using a Haemagglutination Assay

Haemagglutination is a form of agglutination where antibodies bind to red blood cells. Red blood cells are both readily available and the results are readily observable using the naked eye. This video demonstrates the steps involved in a haemagglutination assay, interpreting the results and determining the titre.

This protocol describes a method for extracting small RNAs from human serum. We have used this method to isolate microRNAs from cancer serum for use in DNA arrays and also singleplex quantitative PCR. The protocol utilizes phenol and guanidinium thiocyanate reagents with modifications to yield high quality RNA.

Development and Maintenance of Serum-Free Embryoid Bodies

The video describes the procedure for developing serum-free embryoid bodies (SFEBs) from neuronal progenitor cells using various serum-free differentiation mediums or DM. DM-2 facilitates neurons' maturation and arrangement to form SFEBs, while DM-3 is used for further growth maintenance.
