Brain Cancer Model

Brain cancer models are experimental systems that reproduce key features of brain tumors to support research into disease biology, diagnosis, and treatment. They may use cultured tumor cells, three-dimensional organoids, patient-derived samples, or animal models to examine how cancer cells grow, interact with surrounding neural tissue, invade, and respond to therapeutic conditions. By linking tumor behavior with genetic, cellular, and microenvironmental changes, these models help researchers compare treatments, investigate resistance, and evaluate potential biomarkers. In medicine, they provide a bridge between laboratory studies and clinical research, while patient-derived models can support more representative testing of individualized treatment strategies.

Intracarotid Cancer Cell Injection to Produce Mouse Models of Brain Metastasis

Cited by 32 •

2017

Brain metastasis has become an urgent unmet medical need as its incidence has increased while therapeutic options have remained palliative. Creating experimental animal models of brain metastasis via intracarotid arterial injection of cancer cells facilitates mechanistic studies of the disease biology and evaluation of novel intervention regimens.

Source: Lim, M., et al. Modeling Brain Metastasis by Internal Carotid Artery Injection of Cancer Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)In this video, an anesthetized mouse undergoes a surgical procedure in which cancer cells are injected into the common carotid artery (CCA) to facilitate targeted delivery to the brain. The procedure involves precise suturing and manipulation of the carotid arteries to direct the injected cells toward the internal carotid artery (ICA), promoting tumor formation in the brain...
