External Compression Device

An external compression device is a medical garment, wrap, sleeve, or pneumatic system that applies controlled pressure to a body region, helping manage fluid movement and tissue support without entering the body. Depending on its design, pressure may remain continuous or be delivered intermittently through inflatable chambers that compress tissues in sequence, encouraging venous and lymphatic return and reducing fluid accumulation. These devices are used in postoperative care, limited mobility, venous insufficiency, lymphedema management, and wound care. Proper selection and adjustment are important because pressure must match the patient’s condition, treatment goals, and vascular status.

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA There are two distinct stages in a construction project involving concrete. The first stage involves batching, transporting, and casting fresh concrete. At this stage, the material is viscous, and the workability and finishability are the key performance criteria. The second stage occurs when the hydration process begins shortly after the concrete is placed in the form, and the concrete will...

Externalities are unintended side effects of economic activities that impact third parties who are not directly involved in the market transaction. They can have positive or negative effects that can influence society and the environment in various ways. Positive Externalities Positive externalities occur when a market activity produces benefits for others without those beneficiaries having to pay for it. Examples include: Education: When individuals receive an education, society benefits...
