Facial Allograft Procurement

Facial allograft procurement is the surgical recovery of facial tissues from a deceased donor for transplantation to a recipient with severe facial disfigurement or functional loss. The procedure follows donor consent and medical screening, then carefully separates the skin, soft tissue, bone, nerves, and blood vessels while preserving defined vascular pedicles for later revascularization; the graft is flushed, cooled, and transported under controlled preservation conditions. Precise anatomical planning helps maintain tissue viability and supports reconstruction of appearance, speech, swallowing, and facial movement. This specialized process connects organ donation, reconstructive surgery, immunology, and transplant logistics in vascularized composite allotransplantation.

Source: Olmstead, D. N., et al., Facial Nerve Axotomy in Mice: A Model to Study Motoneuron Response to Injury. J. Vis. Exp. (2015).This video demonstrates the facial nerve crush procedure in a mouse, where blunt dissection through key landmarks exposes the facial nerve trunk at the stylomastoid foramen. Forceps are then used to compress the nerve trunk, inducing axonal damage and disrupting neuronal signal transmission.
