Fasting Serum Lipids

Fasting serum lipids are blood measurements of circulating cholesterol and triglycerides obtained after a period without caloric intake, typically overnight, to assess lipid metabolism and cardiovascular risk. During fasting, recently absorbed dietary fats and chylomicron particles largely clear from the bloodstream, helping measurements of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides reflect baseline levels rather than a recent meal. Clinicians use the lipid profile to identify dyslipidemia, estimate atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk, and guide lifestyle or medication decisions. In medicine, these results also support monitoring of treatment response and evaluation of conditions associated with abnormal lipid metabolism.

Blood Studies for Cardiovascular System III: Serum Lipid Profile

2025

Understanding serum lipids is crucial for maintaining cardiovascular health and preventing heart disease and stroke. Serum lipids are fats and fatty substances in the blood and are crucial for various bodily functions, including energy storage, cellular structure, and hormone production. Serum lipids consist of cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids. Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like substance found in all body cells. It is crucial for producing hormones, vitamin D, and substances that aid...

Measuring Fast Calcium Fluxes in Cardiomyocytes

We present a method to isolate rapid (microsecond) calcium events from slower fluxes in living cells using laser scanning confocal microscopy. The method measures fluorescence intensity fluctuations of calcium indicators by recording line scans of several hundred pixels in a cell. Histogram analysis allows us to isolate the time scales of different calcium fluxes.

Structure of Lipids

Lipids include a diverse group of compounds that are largely nonpolar in nature. This is because they are hydrocarbons that include mostly nonpolar carbon-carbon or carbon-hydrogen bonds. Non-polar molecules are hydrophobic (“water fearing”), or insoluble in water. Lipids perform many different functions in a cell. Cells store energy for long-term use in the form of fats. Lipids also provide insulation from the environment for plants and animals. For example, they help keep aquatic birds and...

Crystallization of Membrane Proteins in Lipidic Mesophases

2011

The protocols describe the essential steps for obtaining diffraction quality crystals of a membrane protein starting from reconstitution of the protein in a lipidic cubic phase (LCP), finding initial conditions with LCP-FRAP pre-crystallization assays, setting up LCP crystallization trials and harvesting crystals.

Fast Reactions

2026

Fast reactions occurring in times shorter than the time needed to mix reactants pose a unique challenge for investigation. In a liquid-phase continuous-flow system, reactants A and B are swiftly pushed into the mixing chamber, where mixing occurs within 1 ms. The reaction mixture then flows through an observation tube, and one measures light absorption to determine species concentrations at various points of the tube. This method is most appropriate when relatively large volumes of reactants...
