Fish Oil Protection

Fish oil protection refers to strategies that preserve the quality, stability, and biological activity of fish oil, particularly oils rich in omega-3 fatty acids used in medicine and nutrition. Because these polyunsaturated fats readily react with oxygen, exposure to heat, light, and air can initiate lipid oxidation, producing unwanted degradation products; antioxidants, controlled processing, and oxygen-limiting storage help slow this process. Effective protection supports the safety, potency, and shelf life of fish-oil supplements and pharmaceutical preparations, while enabling more reliable investigation of omega-3 fatty acids in cardiovascular, inflammatory, and metabolic health.

Osmoregulation in Fishes

When cells are placed in a hypotonic (low-salt) fluid, they can swell and burst. Meanwhile, cells in a hypertonic solution—with a higher salt concentration—can shrivel and die. How do fish cells avoid these gruesome fates in hypotonic freshwater or hypertonic seawater environments? Fish employ osmoregulatory strategies to balance bodily levels of water and dissolved ions (i.e., solutes), such as sodium and chloride. Imagine two solutions separated by a membrane that is permeable to water.

We illustrate the methods involved in screening and identification of the biosurfactant producing microbes. Methods for chromatographic characterization and chemical identification of the biosurfactants, determining the industrial applicability of the biosurfactant in enhancing residual oil recovery are also presented.
