Fractionated Potentials

Fractionated potentials are fragmented electrical signals recorded from excitable tissue, especially the heart, when activation does not travel uniformly through it. In cardiac electrophysiology, fibrosis, scar, or other structural abnormalities can slow and split conduction, so an electrode detects multiple low-amplitude deflections instead of a single sharp electrogram. These patterns help clinicians identify diseased conduction pathways, map substrates associated with atrial or ventricular arrhythmias, and guide catheter ablation, while ongoing research examines how they predict treatment response and arrhythmia recurrence.

Fractional Distillation

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater — University of Connecticut Distillation is perhaps the most common laboratory technique employed by chemists for the purification of organic liquids. Compounds in a mixture with different boiling points separate into individual components when the mixture is carefully distilled. The two main types of distillation are "simple distillation" and "fractional distillation", and both are widely used in organic chemistry laboratories. Simple distillation...

The accompanying video describes the use of the GELFREE 8100 Fractionation System, which partitions complex protein samples on the basis of molecular weight and recovers the fractions in liquid phase. The video describes how the technology works, how it is used, and provides resultant data, with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of fractionated bovine liver homogenate.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Electric potential, also known as "voltage", measures the electric potential energy per unit charge. Electric field is a scalar quantity and is fundamental to many electrical effects. Like potential energy, what is physically meaningful is the difference in the electric potential. For example, the spatial variation in the electric potential is related to the electric...
