Fulton Index

The Fulton Index is a cardiac measurement used to quantify right ventricular hypertrophy, particularly in conditions involving chronic pressure overload such as pulmonary hypertension. It is calculated by dividing the weight of the right ventricle by the combined weight of the left ventricle and interventricular septum after the heart is dissected and weighed. A higher ratio indicates greater right ventricular remodeling and provides an indirect measure of the heart’s response to elevated pulmonary vascular resistance. In medicine and biomedical research, the index supports assessment of disease severity, pathological changes, and treatment effects in patients, autopsy specimens, and experimental models.

Source: Rhiannon M. LeVeque1, Natalia Martin1, Andrew J. Van Alst1, and Victor J. DiRita1 1 Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, United States of America Bacteria are diverse microorganisms found nearly everywhere on Earth. Many properties help distinguish them from each other, including but not limited to Gram-staining type, shape and arrangement, production of capsule, and formation of spores. To observe these properties, one...
