Gastric Drainage Tubes

Gastric drainage tubes are flexible medical devices used to remove fluid, gas, and other stomach contents, helping relieve distension and supporting gastrointestinal management. Inserted through the nose or mouth into the stomach, the tube drains by gravity or connects to regulated suction; its position and output require clinical monitoring to support safe use. In medicine, gastric drainage tubes can decompress the stomach during intestinal obstruction, postoperative ileus, or other conditions that impair normal emptying, and they may help reduce nausea and vomiting while clinicians assess gastrointestinal function. Their use requires attention to placement, tube patency, fluid balance, and potential tissue irritation or aspiration.

Source: Rachel Liu, BAO, MBBCh, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Tube thoracostomy (chest tube placement) is a procedure during which a hollow tube is inserted into the thoracic cavity for drainage of fluid or air. Emergency chest tube insertion is performed for definitive treatment of tension pneumothorax, traumatic hemothorax, large-volume pleural effusions, and empyemas. Irrespective of the cause of air and fluid accumulation in the pleural space, the...

Laparoscopic Radical Gastrectomy for Remnant Gastric Cancer

2025

Laparoscopic radical gastrectomy for remnant gastric cancer has been increasingly adopted as a minimally invasive surgical approach in recent years. This article proposes a detailed operating procedure, aiming to provide practical technical guidance for surgeons and promote the broader adoption of laparoscopic surgery in managing remnant gastric cancer.

We present a method to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and to create a system which lacks CSF within the embryonic zebrafish brain ventricular system. This allows for further examination of CSF composition and its requirement during embryonic brain development.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Procedure: A Bariatric Surgical Procedure for Gastric Resectioning in Murine Model

2025

This video describes a bariatric surgery-Roux-en-Y procedure. This involves the cutting of the jejunum- the middle portion of the intestine- to generate two intestinal limbs. The biliary limb is attached to the existing intestinal loop and the alimentary limb is attached to the stomach, creating a gastric bypass. The gastric bypass created here helps to decrease the nutrient uptake and efficiently reduces body weight.

Acid Mine Drainage

2026

Mining activities that disturb sulfide-rich rocks, particularly those containing pyrite (FeS₂), initiate a cascade of geochemical and microbiological processes with serious environmental implications. When exposed to air and water, pyrite undergoes oxidation, releasing sulfate, ultimately forming sulfuric acid and mobilizing heavy metals into surrounding water systems. This phenomenon, known as acid mine drainage (AMD), results in low pH waters laden with toxic elements that threaten aquatic...
