Healthy Controls

Healthy controls are participants without the disease or condition under investigation who provide a comparison group in medical research. Researchers select or match them using characteristics such as age, sex, and other relevant factors, then assess the same outcomes, samples, or procedures so differences can be attributed more confidently to the condition being studied rather than background variation. Healthy controls support case-control studies, biomarker validation, imaging research, and clinical test development by establishing reference ranges and normal biological patterns. Careful screening and transparent inclusion criteria improve study validity and help distinguish disease-related signals from ordinary human variation.

2025

This study assessed COVID-19 seroprevalence in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, among healthy blood donors across pre-lockdown, during-lockdown, and post-lockdown periods. Of 3,825 samples, 4.5% tested positive for IgG antibodies. Seroprevalence increased significantly post-lockdown, highlighting the role of asymptomatic transmission and the effectiveness of initial restrictions.

Bioavailability Study Design: Healthy Subjects Versus Patients

2025

Bioavailability studies are essential for evaluating a drug's therapeutic efficacy and understanding its absorption patterns under various physiological conditions. Conducting such studies on target patient populations provides more relevant data by simulating real-world disease states. However, practical challenges often necessitate the use of young, healthy adult volunteers as study subjects.Patients may exhibit altered drug absorption patterns due to the effects of the disease itself,...
