Lacrimal Duct Obstruction

Lacrimal duct obstruction is a blockage in the tear-drainage system that prevents tears from flowing normally from the eye into the nasal cavity, often causing persistent watering and irritation. The obstruction may affect the puncta, canaliculi, lacrimal sac, or nasolacrimal duct and can result from congenital narrowing, inflammation, infection, trauma, or age-related changes; retained tears may promote infection such as dacryocystitis. Clinical evaluation uses eye examination, tear-drainage testing, and, when needed, imaging to identify the blockage. Treatment ranges from observation and massage in selected infants to probing, stenting, or dacryocystorhinostomy to restore drainage and protect ocular comfort.

Disruption of bile flow results in severe inflammatory cholestatic liver injury with a characteristic time-dependent sequence of morphological alterations. Here we present a protocol for the surgical ligation of the common bile duct in mice that allows to induce a strong fibrotic response after 21 to 28 days.
