Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal or neural foramina in the lower back that can compress spinal nerves and impair mobility. It most often develops when age-related degeneration causes intervertebral discs to bulge, facet joints to enlarge, or ligaments to thicken, reducing the space available for neural tissue. Compression commonly produces low-back pain, leg pain, numbness, or neurogenic claudication that worsens with standing or walking and improves with sitting or spinal flexion. Clinical evaluation and imaging guide treatment, which may include exercise, medications, injections, or decompressive surgery to relieve symptoms and preserve function.
