Oral Examination

Oral examination is a structured assessment in which an examiner questions a learner verbally to evaluate knowledge, reasoning, communication, and the ability to apply information. In medicine, questions may progress from foundational concepts to clinical cases, requiring the candidate to explain mechanisms, interpret findings, select investigations, or justify management while responding to follow-up prompts. This format provides direct evidence of understanding and exposes misconceptions that written tests may miss. It supports formative feedback and high-stakes evaluation of clinical readiness, although examiner consistency and structured scoring are important for fairness and reliability.
