Portal Vein Puncture

Portal vein puncture is a medical technique that creates needle access to the portal venous system, which carries blood from the gastrointestinal tract and spleen to the liver. Typically performed through a transhepatic route under ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance, the procedure uses controlled needle advancement to enter a portal vein branch while minimizing injury to surrounding vessels and bile ducts. Clinicians can then measure portal pressure, perform portography, obtain blood samples, or establish access for procedures such as transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt placement. In medicine, portal vein puncture supports the diagnosis and treatment of portal hypertension, liver disease, and selected vascular disorders.
