Priority Setting Exercise

A priority setting exercise is a structured method for ranking health problems, interventions, or research questions according to their importance, urgency, feasibility, and expected impact. In medicine, participants define criteria, gather relevant evidence, assign or discuss scores, and compare options through a transparent process that may include stakeholder input and consensus building. These exercises help health systems allocate limited funding, staff, and services, while research teams can identify questions most likely to improve patient outcomes or address unmet needs. By making trade-offs explicit, priority setting supports accountable decision-making and can align clinical, public health, and research agendas with population needs.
